The house and its history |
(cont.) “Mortices 2 feet up in the partition show where a bench had originally been placed, to face the hearth. in the smoke bay. This bench has now been moved beneath the window where it faces the inserted brick hearth. |
Beside the added brick hearth is a blocked door which led into the added stair turret. The other bay in the original house beyond the big room is an inner room. probably used as a parlour until the early 18th Century wing was added at the back. This end bay and outshots are now used as service rooms. |
This pattern of three rooms, with the one heated room in the centre and an added heated wing is repeated on the first floor. The room above the original service room has an inserted partition. Behind this is the back of the stair to the attics with no access from this floor. The stair turret next to the chimney now has no access from the first floor. A newer straight stair down has been built within the 18th Century wing. |
The roof structure is clasped purlin with curved wind braces. Each rafter is pegged to the purlin. The purlin and tie are raised so that there is access beneath. The principal rafter is diminished above the purlin and there is no ridge. The rafters are coupled and pegged. It is a fine roof of good scantling. Only the end bay posts have jowls, the others are straight. |
The half storey attics with l’ 4" walls are divided by the smoke bay which is now floored, but which retains its smoke blackened wattle walls. The 8 foot wide attic room above the original service end is reached direct from beside the ground floor entrance. Across the smoke bay is a 2bay farm storage attic with grain bins and straw on the floor. The entrance to this attic is via the stair turret. The treads have been diverted outside the pentice, and the stair now leads directly from the farmyard to the storage attics above. |
