After 15 years in a very original Edwardian five bedroom semi-detached house in Esher, we moved here on the 1st of August 2002. We loved that house, built in 1904, and we love this one - built in 1555 - 3 years before Elizabeth the First ascended to the throne, 30 years before Shakespeare began to write seriously, 32 years before the potato was introduced to the UK and 6 years after the ring finger changed from right to left....... |
Pevsner mentions the roof massing - “big and tile hung with a complex pattern of gables” The well head in the left foreground is separately listed |
Built in spring/summer 1555 (by tree ring dating this year) the house is of “Smoke-Bay” type. Stables were on the left of the yard, the milking parlour on the right |
To the right of the drive, the bottom field - or “mead” when the house was built. Our neighbour’s donkeys are grazing it here. They come in after hay-making |
The Georgian wing at the back was constructed about 1740. Beneath this is a cellar which floods in winter. |
